  • Xmas '08 gathering at Asian 54



    For our Christmas meeting- we decided to go to our favorite neighborhood spot- Asian 54! Why do we love this place so much? The restaurant is one of the cleanest pho places we've been to, and the ingredients are always fresh! The service is always good too- greet us with a smile, remember our orders, and come around often to refill tea. 

    The pho is definitely one of my favorites too! The broth is very flavorful (you can taste the beef/bones and daikon!) and has very little MSG.  Noodles are cooked just right, the beef slices are tender and lean, and the portion is good! Whats not to like!

    Since we have already reviewed this place last year- I will just leave you with pictures of us enjoying the food and the company!  Happy very very belated new year everyone!

  • Pholicious Meeting 56- Triple Coconut Tree

    For our November meeting we visited a newly opened place in Burnaby- Triple Coconut Tree on 4126 East Hastings Street.  We wanted to show our support for a new pho place before it closes

    We ordered some appies (spring rolls), sandwiches, coffees to tie us over before the pho came.  Unfortunately, everything was sub-par.  The sandwiches didn't have a lot of ingredients and it was soggy because it had a lot, a LOT of mayo in it The coffee was kinda bland too. 




    Then came the pho! It was 5.75 for a small and 6.49 for a large.  The portions were fairly good: lots of noodles and beef.  The beef was tender but some pieces were fatty.  Noodles were cooked just right.  The broth itself was a bit of a dissapointment- it was bland and msg levels were quite high. 




    The best part about the meeting was when one of our members (the hoodlum behind me in the above picture) made me a 'best pho president' card and had everyone signed it (whether or not they agreed w/it hehe) ...it was sooooo sweet!! Isn't it such a cute card?? Pho brings us closer together gives us an excuse to get together and eat something yummy!



    Overall, the place received a lower rating- 5.5.  Not somewhere I would want to go again

  • Pholicious Meeting 55- Halloween in Surrey! Pho Tam!

    What's better than spending Halloween in Surrey?   I've been to Pho Tam once before this meeting... thought it was really good but a bit out of the way to bring the whole gang.  Then Halloween came along so that was a good excuse to visit Surrey! (hope I'm not offending anyone here hehehe).  But look at the bars on the windows:



    SO! here we are.  Not too much to say about the ambiance here.  The servers do have their own 'pho tam' shirts so that's a bonus! The place was packed when we got there.  The turnover was super fast though!  On to the appetizers- some spring rolls and salad rolls.  They were both yum! Look at the size of the shrimp on the salad roll

     


    Now onto the main event- phoooooo! Although the presentation isn't the greatest...it was mighty tasty! The broth was hot and very flavorful, noodles were firm, lots of meat, and I heard they don't use any msg!!! Not sure if it's 100% true... but it definitely taste like it's loaded with msg.  I didn't feel like I was going to die of thrist  

     






    Look at us all enjoying it!  Overall, the pho deserves a solid 9.  Definitely one of the best pho places we've been to! It was totally worth the trip out to Surrey
